The influence of the¡®Hanlyu¡¯
K-pop music is playing in department stores, shopping malls and streets in the Philippines, and you can see a lot of young people imitating our songs. They greeted us with 'Oppa', 'Hello', and 'I love you' under the influence of Korean dramas, and many people knew the names of singers, including Korean girl groups. At all school completion ceremonies, students performed a K-pop dance celebration. During the filming of 'MBC Real Man', students made placards and pickets to cheer. Also, they recognized the cast members in military uniforms and cheered them by name, realizing the power of Hanlyu. Due to the influence of Hanlyu, the residents treated us friendly and it became an opportunity to get to know each other easily. Therefore, we were able to be welcomed by the residents like celebrities wherever we went, including restoration work and medical support.
deployment time and duration
After the typhoon, countries around the world, including the Republic of Korea, as well as UN and NGO organizations dispatched emergency relief personnel from a humanitarian perspective to carry out emergency relief activities such as retrieving the dead, providing daily necessities, and providing medical care. However, as a month passed after the typhoon, the armies of other countries withdrew, and the ARAW units were dispatched when only some NGOs remained.
In fact, the Korean military was dispatched to the disaster recovery unit at a time when the emergency relief ended and the transition to the recovery phase required enormous manpower and equipment. Foreign troops and relief organizations that had been active in the meantime withdrew, and the ARAW unit was dispatched at a time when the locals were psychologically uneasy. And by sweating and working hard on recovery activities, the locals came to have the perception that Korea is a 'true friend'.
When we arrived, a common question we heard from the residents was,¡°When will the Korean troops withdraw?¡± In response,¡°We plan to support disaster recovery here for a year. After that, the Philippine and South Korean governments will discuss the extension. The residents were amazed and grateful for this. The fact that the heavy equipment unit applied for at least one year was a factor that raised the expectations of the local residents that ¡°you can get real help, not condescending.¡±
Active sponsorship of religious and NGO groups
Appointed as the commander of the Philippine disaster recovery unit, I visited religious groups within a short preparation period and requested support. It was a time when most denominations were contemplating how to use the Philippine disaster recovery funds after they had collected them. As a result, we naturally received support as if prepared for the Arau unit. A Christian group has requested the restoration of the church, but ¡°the direct restoration of the ARAW units to religious facilities is limited.¡± and expanded the support to schools, hospitals, orphanages, and nursing homes.
The International Hunger Countermeasure Headquarters came to the unit and offered to support elementary school recovery materials, and distributed relief items such as backpacks and school supplies along with the Arau Unit.
Among the Buddhist groups, 'Beautiful Companion' of the Jogye Order also sponsored the school restoration project. Others The Seoul Lions Club District C and Gangnam-gu Medical Association provided elementary school restoration materials. A Korean nun from Manila visited the base to donate some restoration materials for the orphanage, and students from various churches and Seoul International School sent relief supplies and English books. Thanks to the active support and support of these organizations, the Arau unit was able to carry out its mission successfully.
